Insontis

Written by Christine Jung

A Short Description

This solo piano piece was written to depict the innocence and simplicity of so many lives around the world in different countries and cultures, and how injustice can affect people to make them feel hopeless and afraid.

This piece has 2 themes; the first being the main theme which returns at the end. This theme is played at the beginning on its own, then again with a background. It was written to sound simple, yet poignant and sad to create a lonely atmosphere; one that is felt when there is no freedom or any other basic human right. The second theme (around the 1:25 minute mark) is slightly happier and playful which was aimed at capturing the innocence of the millions of children around the world. The piece then turns darker with the second theme slightly modified and played against a fast-moving left hand to depict a disruption of innocence and a feeling of hopelessness. After the fast and dark section, I brought back the first theme with a more hopeful touch to represent my view of Amnesty. Amnesty International in my eyes has brought back the feeling of hope to many innocent individuals and communities around the world who do not have the power, physically or politically, to help themselves.

The name 'Insontis' comes from the Latin term 'insons insontis' which means 'innocence'.
